The Penn Spinfisher VII 5500 is a highly versatile and rugged spinning reel, perfectly sized for a broad range of saltwater and heavy-duty freshwater applications. As a core member of the acclaimed Spinfisher VII series, it embodies a legacy of durability, reliability, and modern engineering. The 5500 size strikes an ideal balance between line capacity, power, and a more compact, manageable weight, making it a go-to choice for anglers targeting a variety of species.
Key Design and Construction Features
- IPX5 Sealed Body and Spool Design: A defining feature of the Spinfisher VII series is its IPX5 rating. This means the reels body and spool are sealed to prevent the intrusion of saltwater, sand, and other corrosive elements. This protection is vital for maintaining the integrity of the internal gears, bearings, and drag system, ensuring long-term smooth performance even when the reel is subjected to splashes, rain, or heavy spray.
- Full Metal Body and Sideplate: The Spinfisher VII 5500 is built with a full metal body and sideplate. This rigid construction provides a stable and strong housing for the internal components, preventing the frame from flexing under heavy loads. This ensures that the gears remain in perfect alignment, delivering maximum cranking power and smooth operation during a fight.
- CNC Gear Technology: The reel utilizes Penns advanced CNC Gear Technology. The main gear is precision-machined from a solid piece of metal, providing a level of durability and a smooth feel that is superior to standard die-cast gears. This ensures that the reel can withstand the rigors of hard fighting fish.
- HT-100 Carbon Fiber Drag System: The 5500 model is equipped with the sealed HT-100 carbon fiber drag system. The drag washers are housed within the fully sealed spool, protecting them from the elements. This system delivers a smooth and consistent drag performance, which is essential for controlling powerful runs and preventing line breakages.
- 5+1 Sealed Stainless Steel Ball Bearing System: The reel operates on a 5+1 sealed stainless steel ball bearing system. These bearings are sealed to prevent corrosion from saltwater and contamination, ensuring a long and reliable lifespan.
- Superline Spool: The spool is designed with a rubber gasket to prevent braided line from slipping, eliminating the need for monofilament backing. It also features line capacity rings, a convenient visual guide that shows how much line is left on the spool at any given time.
- Instant Anti-Reverse: The reel features an instant anti-reverse bearing, which eliminates rotor back-play for immediate hooksets and a more solid feel.
