At Gerrys Fishing, we understand that when the fish are holding 150 yards out behind the third breaker, a standard reel simply wont cut it. You need a specialist tool designed for the mechanical rigors of distance casting. Enter the Akios Kyori ST8, a reel engineered to push your limits and tame the heavyweights of the surf.
Built around a robust TUF-CORE aluminium body and rotor, the Kyori ST8 is designed for zero-flex performance. While graphite reels can twist under the immense pressure of winching a double-figure Ray or a winter Cod through a heavy swell, the Kyori remains rock-solid. This rigidity ensures that every ounce of power you put into the handle is transferred directly to the gears, providing a high-torque retrieval that feels effortless.
The secret to its casting prowess lies in the Akios XT Weave system. This ultra-slow oscillation mechanism layers the line onto the spool with surgical precision. By minimizing line cross-over and friction, the Kyori allows the line to fly off the spool during the cast with significantly less resistance, adding those vital extra yards to your range.
Control is nothing without smoothness. With 8+1 IAR stainless steel bearings, the retrieve is buttery smooth from the very first turn. When you finally hook into a powerhouse fish, the TORQUE-X fast drag system becomes your best friend. It allows you to go from a near-freespool setting to a locked down fighting drag in a fraction of a turn, giving you immediate control when a fish decides to make a run for the snags.
The reel comes supplied with two anodized aluminium spoolsa deep version for heavy monofilament and a shallow version optimized for thin-diameter braids. This versatility means the Kyori ST8 is ready for any venue, from the deep-water rock marks to the shallowest sandy beaches.

Long-Range Beach Casting: Specifically designed for Big Pit style casting on open beaches where reaching the distance is the only way to get a bite.
Rough Ground & Rock Marks: The aluminium body provides the winching power needed to steer fish away from kelp and submerged ledges.
Targeting Specimen Fish: The combination of the 8+1 bearing system and fast drag makes it a top choice for Rays, Smoothhounds, and big Bass.
High-Wind Conditions: The slow oscillation helps keep line lay tight and consistent, preventing wind knots even when casting into a gale.
The Kyori ST8 is a distance machine, but you have to treat the line lay with respect. Because it has such a slow oscillation, I recommend not overfilling the spoolstay about 2mm below the lip. This keeps the line flow crisp and prevents the coils from catching on each other during an explosive cast. Also, the fast drag is sensitive; once you find your fighting setting, make a small mark on the drag knob so you can return to it instantly during a frantic session.
Is the Kyori ST8 fully saltwater protected?
While no reel is indestructible, the Kyori features high-grade stainless steel bearings and an aluminium body specifically treated for saltwater use. As always at Gerrys, we recommend a quick fresh-water rinse after every session to keep the XT Weave system performing at its peak.
What is the difference between the ST8 and ST10?
The primary difference lies in the spool capacity and body size. The ST8 is the slightly more compact model, offering a great balance for 13ft to 14ft rods, while the ST10 offers even more line capacity for those truly extreme scenarios or very heavy mono.
Can I use the shallow spool for monofilament?
You can, but it is specifically designed for braid. The shallow depth ensures that the braid doesnt bury into itself under pressure, which is a common issue on deeper spools. For 15lb+ mono, the deep spool is the better option.
Does the handle have any play in it?
No. Because the handle is CNC machined and screws directly into the main gear, the connection is solid and wiggle-free, providing a much more connected feel when playing a fish.
