When targeting large, wary predators, presentation is everything. At Gerrys Fishing, we recommend the Cox & Rawle 1/0 Up and Over Pennel Rig as the ultimate setup for presenting large, natural baits. This specialized rig is engineered to provide a long, flowing trace that allows your bait to flutter naturally in the tide, completely clear of the lead weight.
The Up and Over design is particularly effective for distance casting. It allows a long snood to be clipped down behind the lead, creating a streamlined profile in the air. Upon impact with the water, the rig releases, extending to its full length on the seabed. This provides a stealth presentation that keeps the fish away from the hardware of the lead and rig body, which is critical when targeting sensitive species like Bass, Rays, and Cod.

Perfect Bait Presentation: The pennel (two-hook) arrangement is designed specifically for long baits like whole squid, large mackerel fillets, or bluey wraps. By having a hook at both the top and bottom of the bait, you ensure that no matter how a fish attacks, you have the best possible chance of a secure hook-up.
Distance and Streamlining: Despite the long snood, this rig clips down behind the lead. This reduces wind resistance during the cast, allowing you to hit those far-off gullies where specimen fish often patrol.
Fish Safety & Confidence: Because the bait is presented on a long, flowing trace, it moves naturally with the current. Fish feel less resistance when they pick up the bait, leading to more confident takes and better bite registration.
Anti-Tangle Technology: The Up and Over mechanism ensures that even a 3ft or 4ft snood stays untangled during the flight and the descent to the seabed.
The Squid-Wrap Advantage: When using this rig with a whole squid, thread the bottom hook through the head and the top (pennel) hook through the tail. Use plenty of Gerrys Bait Elastic to secure the bait into a streamlined sausage shape. This not only makes the bait more durable against small nuisance fish but also ensures it flies like a bullet. The twin 1/0 hooks provide an incredible gape, making it very difficult for a large Bass or Cod to eject the bait once theyve taken it.
Why use two hooks (Pennel) instead of one?
Using two hooks ensures that long baits stay straight and dont bunch up on the hook. It also doubles your hook-up potential, as a fish grabbing the head or the tail of the bait will encounter a hook point.
How does the Up and Over release work?
The long snood goes up to a clip near the top swivel and then over and down to the bait release clip near the lead. On impact with the water, the tension is released, and the snood slides through the top clip to its full, flowing length.
Is a 1/0 hook strong enough for Rays?
Yes. Cox & Rawle hooks are forged for strength. A 1/0 is an excellent size because it is large enough to hold a substantial bait but fine enough to provide excellent penetration into the hard, bony mouths of Rays and Smoothhounds.
What is the best weight to use with this rig?
This rig works perfectly with 6oz wired grip leads. The grip lead provides the necessary anchor point to keep the long snood extended and working correctly in the tide, rather than allowing it to wash back toward the rig body.
